I've had this bible for awhile now - there is some personal information contained within the bible. It was given to a Charles Bates by a Robert Dormore at the baptism of Bates son Peter on June 29th 1751 in or at the parish of St Margaret - Westminster. Their penmanship was so exquisite back then. There is a further reference to Robert as being baptized April 4 1701 registered in the parish of Burnham county of Bucks. That was signed by an M Tate.  That information was recorded on the first 2 pages of this bible.

On the last page of the bible it states that Peter Bates was born on june 29th of 1751 - again St Margaret - Westminster.  That inscription was signed John Harding.

There is also a very small envelope on which someone has hand written some obscure information in regards to something about 1200 paintings - I really can't make much of that out - perhaps you will be better at it.

The leather front and back are not in jeopardy of becoming detached. However it is a well read bible.  There are no other hand markings that I found. The pages are kinda of water marked (see pics) but not ripped or folded. Condition is as shown in pictures.

Considering that this book is 264 years old - I think it is in fair condition. I love old bibles and their history. This family did take care of this bible I think. The parchment is not all crispy or crumbling. The pages turn freely.

I've tried to research these families with not a great amount of success.  The Bates family tree is quite extensive and spans many centuries and 2 continents. It seems there is a lot of information in the 1700's that might be lost. Found not an over whelming amount during that time but a lot of information from the 1800's and on. Being a layperson researcher I'm thinking you must have been important to have your child baptized in St Margaret at that time but I could be mistaken.  I so wanted to find more info on these 3 people but alas no luck.

If you have any further info or I have gotten something totally incorrect in this listing please contact me for addressing.
