D&B green depression glass mixing bowl with a very useful grip handle and double pour spout. The inside has a divot where you would place your mixer end. The handle is marked Pat. Appld For and the base marked D&B co.
This D & B mixing bowl is made with Uranium to obtain the beautiful green color. Uranium glass is glass which has had uranium, usually in oxide diuranate form, added to a glass mix before melting for coloration. The proportion usually varies from trace levels to about 2% by weight uranium, although some 20th-century pieces were made with up to 25% uranium.
This bowl is heavy. The glass is very thick and sturdy.
Measures 8 1/4 inches across (interior) and 10 1/4 inches from the edge to edge of handle.
Has some straw markings where the glass was poured. Every other bowl I have seen for sale online appears to have similar straw marks. The bowl has overall scraping, wear, and mixer wear from use but is still in good condition.
Uranium glass was once made into tableware and household items, but fell out of widespread use when the availability of uranium to most industries was sharply curtailed during the Cold War in the 1940s to 1990s. Most such objects are now considered antiques or retro-era collectibles, although there has been a minor revival in art glassware. Otherwise, modern uranium glass is now mainly limited to small objects like beads or marbles as scientific or decorative novelties.
This would make a nice addition to a Uranium glass collection or a nice addition to a vintage kitchen.
