Well the truth of the matter is I don't know what the heck this is - here's what I do know - King Louis XIII of France in 1640 started issuing some coins immortalizing himself of course. This pendant seems to be a costume piece relating to his coins. It's an incredibly ornate bezel that if I could have figured out how to get the coin out I would have used in something else.
I do not believe it is sterling as it sticks promptly to a strong magnet. The coin portrait is very 3 dimensional - chased work with the figure bumping out. The bezel is very repousse in nature. I'm thinking it was produced in France not the USA.
All in all it's a fascinating piece that's sat around on my desk long enough. I try to research my pieces the best I can and over the years I've yet to find another like this one.
If I was younger and still casting I would cut that coin out and recast that bezel as it is a very fascinating design.
