It's a lovely - solid - ornate box with a very secure locking mechanism. I acquired this piece in Aswan early 90's from a small antiquities shop near the Old Cataract Hotel. It was used when I purchased it and I actually have no clue how old it is. It has an unusual bail that I rarely see. I added an Italian sterling rope chain at that time. It has a strong lobster clasp. The chain measures 20". On the sides of the locket there is a great bit of detailing that I don't see much anymore. The locket or box inside is tarnished over the years and I will leave it as found. On the bottom of the backside there is a faint 925 stamp which basically means nothing since that mark has been used since the 14th century. (did you know that?) There is an additional makers mark that I can not attribute to a specific jeweler. The blue lapis stone is lovely. The box itself measures 1 1/8" long and .75" wide.
